Aymericus, Rainerius y los canónigos de Saint-Léonard de Noblat. ¿Quién escribió la “Guía del Peregrino”?

This paper examines the evidence of authorship of the five-book compilation known as Jacobus, its title in three copies, or the Codex Calixtinus in honour of one of its supposed authors, or the Liber Sancti Jacobi on account of its contents which relate in one way or another to St James the Greater, Apostle of Spain. Traditionally attributed to the authorship of Aymericus Picaudus, priest of Parthenay, in fact Aymericus Picaudus is documented only as the author of one of the songs in the added quire at the end of Book V, and in the False Bull of Pope Innocent, also among the additions. Texts by many authors are included among the sermons in Book I, the Liturg y for the Feasts of St James, while other contenders for authorship of all or parts of the compilations are Pope Calixtus II, his chancellor Aymericus (Christian name only), and the largely unrecognized figure of Rainerius, who negociated with Archbishop Diego Gelmírez of Santiago for the acquisition of a relic of St James for Bishop Atto of Pistoia, as we know from interpolations in Book I of the Pistoia manuscript. The relic is housed in a splendid 13th century reliquary in Pistoia Cathedral. Rainerius was very well connected in ecclesiastical circles in France and England as well as Italy, and ended his career as schoolmaster at Santiago. He is a very likely candidate for the authorship of the Jacobus compilation and deserves to be better known
